Art and Faith
As an artist of faith, I’m continually hosted at a grand banquet of ideas, and the feast always satisfies. Yet sometimes, the blessings of heaven’s table overwhelm me with more inspiration than I can handle, so to keep my sanity I try to bless back—this is the kernel of the creative germ in me – a desire to love, as I have been loved.
I strive to be faithful to the ideas that come to me, but as is the case in everyday life, it gets complicated. In 1955, J.R.R. Tolkien quoted C.S. Lewis saying, “If they won’t write the kind of books we want to read, we shall have to write them ourselves.” And so I, and others like me, work feverishly to say words that haven’t been said, play unplayed music, tell stories untold, and form images that can only be found in the deepest caverns, or farthest reaches of space.
There is something in every person, whether they know it or not, that captures a little of the essence of God. The Imago Dia. This is the impetus for all creativity and desire to make, build, express, communicate, or in some cases fix things; like Jesus who entered the world to repair it’s brokenness and make everything new.
What you’ll find on these pages is amature art. Amature, not meaning lessor in quality, but
In my case, I respond to the One who has loved me with fresh acts of creation in service. Maybe your creation is cooking a meal, preparing a bouquet, speaking a kind word, telling a story, sharing a song, or orchestrating a creative playtime with a child. Another might paint a portrait, compose music, or write a book. It’s all wonderful! It’s all part of the plan to help us be happy and healthy in the time we have.
Sometimes, the creative options send us careening, overwhelmed with possibilities, but if we focus, persisting to give God the glory, the results will be simple unexpected beauty we couldn’t have experienced otherwise.
As you browse, try approaching each piece with the heart of a child, and anticipate that the gift is meant for you and crafted for your sole delight.

Everyday Amazed is a Substack that features poetry, flash stories, and digital images aimed at inspiring viewers to grow in love for one another and God.
The stories, quotes, and poetry in Everyday Amazed have been written the old-fashioned way by people using hands, microphones, or keyboards sometimes beginning as scribbles on a napkin, a VM, scrap of paper, or journal entry that are transferred to digital for the final edits.

The images above are some that have been curated for Everyday Amazed. Some are gleaned from paid and free image services, friends, personal photographs, original digital art, and created with AI under the handle Windwalker using Midjourney. 40 Days With Jesus
Daily Imaginative Thoughts and Reflections for Lent
With reflection questions by Valerie Smith

Why must we wait?
Imagine …
At night, we wait for the morning. In loneliness, a friend. In toil or sickness, we wait for relief. Jesus’ forty-day fast was a time of waiting, and during that time, He became needy—just like we are. As you consider fasting during Lent, 40 Days with Jesus can take you on a daily, imaginative journey through your period of fasting and leads you home again to resurrection life.
Each daily text includes an illuminating scripture quote and a short speculative devotional, along with a few questions to stimulate further contemplation. 40 Days with Jesus inspires the more imaginative Everyday Amazed Substack series, Awaiting Angels.

Through a Glass Dimly
Words are beautiful.
In many ways, they challenge us, inspire us, and thrill us as they propel us into grand vistas of meaning and story. But they are beautiful in another way, in the manner where shape, line, and form come together. The way they flow and relate to one another results in a beauty that transcends meaning. We are invited to look, not only comprehend but see, truly see, and let the power behind the words move you.

These dynamic designs are details from banners and wall panels that aim to inspire us to recognize that there is something more to life. This deeper meaning becomes a profound mystery and Spirit that surrounds us everywhere. This power and influence resides within us and extends far beyond our wildest dreams or knowledge.
